One thing I didn't like in my 3Com Wireless LAN Access Point 2000 was its weak encryption. Before I got a WPA-enabled AP, I had to mitigate this threat somehow by rotating the WEP keys in an automatic manner (daily rotation had satisfactory effort/result ratio on my low volume network).
From the wired side I used a Linux script, which imitated genuine admin interaction in the configuration panel of the Access Point. 3COM AP 2000 key changer used some Lynx recording functions to provide non-interactive console change of the current WEP key.
On the client side I used Wi-Fi Keys.
